You may not understand a single word of South Korean rapper Psy’s club anthem Gangnam Style, except for the only phrase in English, “Hey, sexy lady!,” but it doesn’t matter.
50 MILLION VIEWS on YouTube, for the song’s completely wacky, catchy, dance heavy video, need no translation. The tune, Ibiza-ready with a relentless synthy beat, is a worldwide hit.
In the video, released last month and also ranked No. 1 on iTunes, barrel-chested Psy – a.k.a. 34-year-old Jae-Sang Park – goes from a park to a horse stable to a bus filled with disco balls and beyond, jiggling, prancing and shimmying in colorful suits and bow ties, surrounded by gals in sparkling hot pants. He dances in the subway, he dances in the street. He half dances seated on the toilet. He wears sunglasses the whole time. Psy is a one-man funk machine.
“I did a lot of strange dance moves for 12 years in Korea,” Psy told The Associated Press. “This is kind of (the) same story.”
Celebrities have come out of the woodwork as fans, from Katy Perry to Josh Groban and Nelly Furtado. Psy even had a meeting with Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun last week, reported AP.
